National Seashore News

The western pond turtle re-introduction program has officially launched. The project is a collaborative effort between Point Reyes National Seashore, Golden Gate NRA, Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, Sonoma State University, and the San Francisco Zoo with the goal of re-introducing western pond turtles to sites in Golden Gate NRA

We already have radio transmitters deployed on eight female turtles. The team will use radio-telemetry to track the females to their nesting locations in the parks in order to collect turtle eggs, which will then be transferred to the San Francisco Zoo. The zoo will hatch the eggs and rear the juveniles until they are large enough to be released.  See photo above.

Temporary weekend/federal holiday beach closures to protect Western Snowy Plovers begin on May 28 and last through September 5, 2016 = the section of the Great Beach from North Beach parking to Abbotts Lagoon.
